Building Hadrian’s Wall: Keeping out the Techno Pixies

Category : hints and tips

Long ago, in a land far far away… (from Rome that is)(or is it Tatooine?!?!)

A wall was errected. The year, circa 122 Anno Domini. The reason? To keep the Pixies out. The Romans had exanded their empire far into foreign lands. They suffered many attacks from the Pixies (the inhabitants from the North). It was not built in a day, but rather it was built across six years. It served as protection, but also served as a way to control those going in and out, as well as a way to allow some trade and taxation.

Do we still have Hadrian’s Walls today? Of course! They are a major tourist attraction that attest to the power of the Roman Empire presence in Briatin.

Should we create more of Hadrian’s Walls? YES! Today we don’t suffer from attacks from the Pixies (or do we?), but rather attacks from the age of technology. How many times have you sat down to complete a task, only to be interupted by technology. A cell phone call, a show on TV, Facebook, email, webinars, IMs, games, text messages and the list goes on and on.

The best thing to do is to build Hadrian’s Wall around you. Alex Jeffreys talks to many about going Foward to Basics. It is a concept that we should visit, and revisit often. Ground yourself, and good things will come.

1. Make goals. Create a plan. Without one, you are lost, disorganized, and blindly throwing darts with the expectation of hitting the bullseye. Create a plan that starts with the end, and works backward. Create goals for 1 year from now and work backwards. Chunk your plan into 90 day, then 60 day, then 30 day blocks. It will help focus you immensely.

2. Make your DID and DO sheets. Record what you need to do, as well as what you did. You will be amazed at the time wasters that pop in there! Recording what you have done and what you plan to do makes you accountable. By being accountable, it helps you measure just how well you are doing on reaching your goals. If you focus, you can reach your goals easily within weeks, rather than months!

3. Make a pledge to be productive. Record it. Post it where you can see it regularly. It helps! The pledge is just one small way to make your stick to your goals.

4. Keep yourself organized – this is key. Without organization, Hadrian’s Wall would have been a mess. It would not have been built so solidly, steadily, and withstood the test of time for us to see today.

5. Get a timer. If you worked a task for 60 mins in productive sessions and did that 4 times in a day, you could do more productive tasks than others would do in a month. So in 12 days you could do more than they would have in a year. That is some powerful stuff. Think of how far you could go if you did this completely for a month! A great timer for work on your computer can be found at The Focus Master.com/

6. Take breaks. Take a fun break every hour or so. BUT, don’t let it run too long. Use a timer to help get yourself back on track when you need to.

All these things will help you build a wall so you don’t go “off with the pixies”. In case you do go off with the Pixies…don’t forget where your mind is. Here is your fun distraction for the day…..

Enjoy.

Hi Jerry

Great post. The only one I am having a problem with is point 6!

Practice makes perfect eh?

regards

Joe

Hey Jerry,

I really have to get back to that first module. With so much to do now the plan at the start has expired along time ago.

Forward to basic is definitely one to go back to time and time again.

Great stuff

Glyn
