How do they find you? Ways to get noticed….

Category : hints and tips, traffic

So in this world of the Internet….there are millions of property (websites) already taken. There are millions to be created. The sky is the limit. So let’s discuss the different ways to get found! I am going to toss a few out, with examples, then let’s see where this goes. I would love to hear what works for you!

Referral Traffic
This is a great offline AND online model. Think about it. You know a guy who does X. Your friend needs X done. You tell them about it. Guy does X for you and you are happy (hopefully). You then tell other people who need X done about this guy. His business expands. That is a great offline model that a friend of mine uses. He recently came over and did some home repairs for my house. I have since told other people about it. If they need something, I give them his number. Easy business for him. Online is the same way. Your website has, let’s say, a video on how to add a paypal button to a page to sell something. I need to know how to do it. I find out about your page, use it, and hopefully share this information with others. Not a bad gig.

Banner Traffic
There are 2 different ways this happens. You can have people who you are friends with post the banners on their pages that link to your site or offer. Awesome. FREE ADVERTISING = GOOD STUFF. Hopefully people click on the banner to come check it out. OR, you could do a PPC campaign (sometimes the right step, but often a way to empty your pockets if you are not careful). Place your ad in the right locations, people click, you pay, but you have traffic.

Giveaways
A preferred method of many people is a giveaway. After all, we all love something for free….right? You give me a free ebook, I like it, I come to see what else you have to tell me via an embedded link or autoresponder message. Easy way to get lots of traffic…but not always targeted and responsive. I have built an email list this way. Some people have built lists that are HUGE this way – and there will be a great product in the fall about this too….I already previewed it, and can’t wait for the final product to emerge.

Selling a Product
Create a product, get a site and some JVs. They mail out for you and VOILA. Traffic. This is a great situation for you and the JVs, since hopefully everyone is making some financial gains, but also you gain traffic.

Forum Posting
Free help for others is a great way to help drive traffic to you. In your signature line on your posts, add a link. People see it, chekc out your link if interested, and you get some fresh new traffic. Hopefully they return! This type of traffic costs you just your time and knowledge.

Google Love
Your keywords are just that….KEY! Getting noticed by Google is an important step. I have one website that is moving up in Google, and because of it, I am noticing an increase in profits each and every month. Learning SEO is a HUGE process, but picking up tips and tricks along the way is a helpful thing! I recently took a business who’s webpage didn’t show up in the first 500 results when doing a search for a major related term. A little bit of this and that, and now they are within the top 40 in under 4 days. As I tweak things a bit more, they should move up more.

Soon, I will be posting more ideas along the way….including a great example of viral videos and websites (do you remember the Hamster Dance?)
So what works for you? What doesn’t work? If you were talking with someone who is just starting out, what would you suggest and why? How about a conversation with a more seasoned online person…..what would you say to them?

Hi Jerry,
That’s a lot or tips and information you share here. The best part is the way you deliver. I found your writing is very motivating.

I have yet to find and used one promotion method that works out the magic for me. Forum had drive some good conversion traffic fr me, but it really takes a lot of brain work because we need to provide valuable help and advise at whatever forum we are involved.

I am also beginning to tread some water on Giveaway events recently, joined 2 and are working my way to grasp what is it really about.

Been busy and putting a lot of time in Blog Hopping recently as I am in Jacinta’s 100 Blog Comments challenge. It won’t gave the explosive traffics like the “gurus” , but at least I am making some very interesting, if not meaningful connection with some real people on the web.

Anyway. Thanks for your valuable post here. Will sure to refer it back, one method at a time as I learned and progress.

Cheers
Jason Ser

I just participated in my first giveaway and built a list from it of 268 people, with a further 34 signing up as affiliates for my product. I thought that was pretty good going, then spoke to another marketer who said it is an amazing result! Apparantly they aren’t so good for building a big list if your name is not already known. They are great fun though and I think everyone should give them a go. Great list, good luck with the challenge!

Enjoy the journey.

Jerry,

I like adswaps myself simply because I find them easier and they save me time to do other things. I have not visited a lot of forums because I find it like Twitter…you can spend a lot of time, but how much actually gets done? If you can get in there, post, and not wander around, it’s a good idea. So far, I have not felt I had the time to do a lot of forum posting.

Hey Jerry, Great post and some useful information, I am fairly new to all this stuff, so far I have just tried blog hopping and found this to be one way to create interest in my blog. I guess the key action here is that we need to take interest in people. Its about building relationships and creating value for people.
I have tried building a list without much success so perhaps I just need to find a better giveaway.
What have you found the way to drive traffic to your site?

Hi Jerry,

Yep Free Advertising is always nice…

But is it free?
Anything that takes time has a cost as the time cannot be replaced!
So it might also be worth mentioning that TARGETED traffic is what we really want.

Therefore the hamster dance would have a heap of teenagers without credit cards or an interest in marketing turning up at our sites….lol

This naturally helps with google and alexa – but doesn’t get us many optins and sales…lol

Still = you never know, for some it could be that they are also interested in what we have to offer … but a little more targeting could save a lot of wasted time :)

Hope that helps

Hi Jerry, fantastic post for the 100 blog comment challenge. It will help lots of people understand the different ways needed to be found.

I do quite a bit of forum posting and blog hopping. I have one product online with plans for more.

My next product is going to be a free one in the hope of building my list, which is going to be my main focus for the next few months.

If you use twitter jerry could you let me have your twitter name and i’ll add you to the list of blog contributors.

R&R, Barry

@Jason-
I agree that the forum posting is tough. The “brain work” is a lot. I am not saying that it is not possible though. In one of my other niches I spent hours in forums writing responses, posting new information and pics, and more. I saw some benefit to it, but those in some of those niches were not into purchasing, but more into discussing. After about a year, I slowly regressed on my posting. I do drop in from time to time, but find some other methods work better for certain niches.

@Cheryl-
I have not done any adswaps yet. It is something that I am working towards. Perhaps it is fear of the unknown that is holding me back a bit. I would love to see my list be a bit more responsive to some of my mailings before I put out someone elses….it would be better for them!

@ Mandy-
THAT IS AN AWESOME RESULT! I think that whatever you are promoting for a response like that, you should keep going! We are told over and over again that original content does WAY better in giveaways. Giveaways are happening all the time. Just be sure to pick and choose. Some are great….others are junk.

Hi Jerry

I am an adswapper and I also go into a few giveaways but I just get a trickle of people from them. I like forums but when I am very busy I stay well away from them because they are time consuming.

A little about me – My name is Sue McDonald and I am a student of Mark Terrell and I am actually going through the course a second time – by invitation. I love it and know if I do all he says, I will be successful. I am Australian but the US is my second home as I have family there and visit quite often. This is why I started Internet Marketing so I can travel whenever I want and have the money to do what I want.

Well I hope you are doing well and you become very successful. I would love you to come visit my blog and leave a comment.

Kind regards

Interesting post Jerry. 8) I’m not sure which is the best traffic gathering system – I’m new to all this, but it would seem that all of those methods would take up a lot of time.

I’m concentrating on blog hopping at the moment, and my traffic has doubled in the first two weeks of the 100 comment challenge. :-)

Keep up the good work Jerry.

Hi Jerry

Welcome to the challenge!

My favourite traffic generator and list builder is creating banner graphics with an optin to my list.

I give the banners to my affiliates to use on their sites. They get to give their subscribers some free coaching videos and their subscriber becomes my subscriber…and hopefully customer.

There are many ways to create web traffic and the internet is always changing so it’s good to have many ways to get it.

I also like using traffic geyser for my video distribution. When we were getting our golf site to the #1 position on google, I used video to speed up the process.

They stick around too, we currently have 28 of the top 30 videos…which is pretty cool.

Good luck with the challenge and enjoy the blog hopping :)

That stupid Hamster tune is back inside my head, a little bit of Kylie should get it shifted!

I have just participated in my first JV event this year with my own product, and it has done really well for me.

The other traffic generation that I have found to work is backlinking from high ranking sites, if you find relevant ones and build your presence on these then the traffic comes fairly easily.

At the moment I am receiving a little more traffic from this 100 blog comment challenge. So you can gain more traffic from blog hopping.

Advertising will give you more too. Whether paid or free, you just need to budget and plan. Yahoo answer’s is another good traffic builder. Help others and they will come looking for more answers.

Just make sure that the traffic you receive is targeted or they will not be interested in what you are offering.

Hi Gerry,

Some good advice there my friend. There are a lot of ways to get traffic and if you want it all you have to do it all. Articles, products, adswap (not for me really too many freebie hunters), affiliates (targeted), PPC, Blogs, JV’s, Freebies, email courses, physical CD’s (links to your sites), banners, popups, footer ads, and more.

In my opinion the best traffic comes from products and JV’s. These are all paying customers who want to learn from you. This gives you the freedom to build relationships with guys who want to learn and who are not just in it for the freebies.

Excellent post Gerry!

Hi Jerry

Good post with lots of ideas to get noticed. I only have a small list which has been built entirely from two giveaway events, but I suspect that these events attract mostly freebie seekers.

Next on my ‘to do’ list is article marketing. I’m not too keen on the idea of adswaps as I find it a bit irritating when I get inundated with adswap emails from people whose lists I’m on and again, they will bring in the freebie seekers.

It’s hard to know what to do for the best.

Hi Jerry, excellent writing! I’m blogging, blog hopping, actively tweeting, recently active on facebook and linked in and I’m joining jv giveaway events to get my site noticed. I try to keep my blog both search engine compliant and as optimized as I know how but I have a ways to go before the search engines will show my site much love. I’m also learning to get good PR backlinks to my site which will help to bring an increase in page rank, e.g., registering website with directories like dmoz.org. Best of luck, Steve D.

Traffic is the bread and butter in any online venture.
Thanks for the tips and I hope you will go more indepth on each seperate technique in the future.

Hi Jerry,
Traffic? I get a lot of traffic from blog hopping and reciprocal comments. Also Twitter and Facebook.
Targeted? that’s another thing in itself!

I have also been in some giveaways and built a list from that, but I am getting away from that right now. Making your own product and getting targeted traffic rocks.

So I am making a product.
THAT takes a lot of research. Finding a hungry market and knowing who your market is and how they think is a job in itself!
Gotta get into their head and their mindset.
Then get into the traffic generation. I hear article marketing is best. We will see! I have never wrote an article, so it’s on the to do list!

Thanks and have an amazing day!!

Hi Jerry,

Good post.

I use Giveaways and article Marketing mostly.
The jury is still out with Giveaways as I don’t find these people particularly responsive.
I also find there ar4e so many giveaways at any given time that they are becoming seriously devalued.

Article Marketing is better at getting interested people I feel.
However, as Daniel says you have to use all the traffic getting methods if you want it all!

Hi Jerry,

When I was a newbie (a few years ago) I thought that when I create my first website I will gain lots of visitors overnight. LOL.I think many people are too.

Exposure is the secret to success online. By getting your website noticed is critical for your online success because without website traffic you CANT make money.

The traffic methods you are sharing in this post are excellent. I’ve used all of them in the past some with good results and some with not that good result.

“Selling a Product” traffic is one of the highest quality traffic that you will get. It’s a targeted traffic and the visitors are …BUYERS! This is one of the reasons why everyone has to be creating their own products.

And of course if you want to make money (long term) from ALL that traffic you have to find a way to “capture” the traffic. In other words build your list!

Just my 2 cents.

Take care,
